ANI and NIAC, an affiliate in California, grew from an idea posed in Pamela Davis’ Master's thesis at UC Berkeley. In her thesis, she proposed that instead of relying on insurance companies that were inconsistent in their willingness to provide affordable insurance, the nonprofit sector actually could get control of this important financial service and make sure nonprofits were paying their fair share and no more. Pamela’s dream was to engage nonprofits in risk management by providing a variety of free or highly subsidized management services as part of the insurance purchase. And then, if together, the claims experience was better than anticipated, we would share that good fortune with the members that made it happen. Our experience since ANI's founding in 2001 has been terrific. ANI members currently accrue credits toward a dividend plan the company has in place, however, ANI is not yet paying dividends. Its older California affiliate, NIAC, however, has declared more than $22.1 million in dividends to members since 2007.

ANI is currently insuring 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
